Track & Field Dolphins Impress at City Championship Finals
Demonstrating a balanced program, the Palisades Track & Field Team took home medals in a variety of events at the City Finals Meet at Birmingham High School.
For the Varsity Boys, Carlos Bustamante ran a lifetime best time of 4:23 to finish fourth in the 1600 meter/mile race. Seniors Mike Fujimoto and Rashaad Moore finished 8th and 10th in the 800 Meter final.
In the Varsity Girls Division, Erika Martin scored 20 points in 3 events, setting school records in the long jump at 17'9 and 3/4 inches, and the 100 hurdles in 14.88 seconds. She was second in both events by the slightest of margins. She also picked up a 4th place in the 300 meter hurdles, and a 7th place in the 100 meter dash. Mariah Fisher was second in the High Jump at 5 feet even.
Both pole vaulters in the girl's divisions won City Championships: Camille Liberatore at 10 feet even to win the varsity event, and Jami Greenberg at 9 feet even in the Frosh Soph Division. Freshman Deborah Abber was 10th in the Varsity Mile in 4:28, a personal record; Melissa Tallis also ran a p r in the Frosh Soph Girl's mile in 5:42. Freshman Sophia Stone was fourth in the 3200 meters (two mile) race in a p r of 12:20. Sophomore Amber Greer was third in the 300 hurdles with a lifetime best of 53.4 seconds.
Frosh Soph Boys had two City Champions: Kolmus Iheanachu in the shot put, throwing a wopping 48'5", and Eric Lopez perhaps the most outstanding effort of the day in the 800 meters. Eric's time of 2:01.5 is the second fastest 10th grade time in school history. Freshman Grant Stromberg ran an awesome 10:16 for third place in the 3200 frosh soph final. Freshman Kevin Strangeway finished 6th in the long jump at 19 feet even.
